One of Newborn Quintuplets Unwell
2002-03-22
The second of China's one week old quintuplets, a boy, was transferred to Beijing Children's Hospital two nights ago, according to Tuesday's Beijing Morning Post.

Sources from the Beijing Maternity Hospital said the baby recently began vomiting and developed abdominal distention. Treatment began immediately and specialists from Beijing Children's Hospital were called in for consultation.

Later, colitis was diagnosed and an operation was conducted on the baby.

The other four quintuplets are still under intensive care in Beijing Maternity Hospital and four nurses have been assigned to give them exclusive care.

Specialists say that due to their premature delivery, the five babies are all still in an unstable condition and all have
suffered complications since their birth on March 4. Breathing difficulties, jaundice and infection are further complications which may occur in the near future.

The daily medical fees for each infant is 2,000 yuan (240 U.S. dollars).
