2001-11-06

The Yangling Agricultural Hi-tech Demonstration Zone in northwest China's Shaanxi Province has turned into a showcase of modern agricultural science in China since it was founded in 1997.

Yangling has attracted more than 4,000 agro-scientists specializing in 64 fields. They have developed 5,000 scientific research results which generated total profits of 200 million yuan. Significant progress has been made in the research of dry land farming, water-efficient agriculture, wheat breeding and embryo cloning.

Over 340 enterprises, including 12 Sino-foreign joint ventures, have settled in the demonstration zone. Twenty-seven firms have opened with research covering reproduction of fine strains, deep processing of farm produce, dry land farming and bio-engineering.

Scientists in Yangling have cloned the first live goat from adult body cells in China.

Chen Zongxing, director of the demonstration zone and vice provincial governor of Shaanxi, said the gross domestic product of Yangling is to reach 5 billion yuan in five to 10 years.
