The borehole depth of the No. 1 well of Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling (CCSD) program has exceeded 5, 000 meters: 5, 000.54 meters at four a.m. December 22. This marks the nation's significant scientific project has realized its preset goal.

Continuous core drilling into hard crystalline rock to as deep as 5, 000 meters, unprecedented in China, is a highly difficult undertaking across the world. Currently only very few countries have made it.

The Chinese technicians for the drilling project, conquering lots of difficulties, solved a great many problems and made such an achievement through totally applying the nation's self-developed drilling techniques. The project can be regarded as a new milestone in China's drilling history.

Due to schedule adjustment, the depth was further set to be 5, 100 meters so drilling is still underway.
